Description
The Alte Schloss in Stuttgart, with a history spanning over 1,000 years, originated as a water castle around 950. Initially built for Duke Liudolf of Swabia to safeguard a vital stud farm, it later served as the residence for the Counts and Dukes of Württemberg for four centuries. Duke Christoph's 16th-century renovations transformed it into a Renaissance masterpiece while retaining its medieval character. In the 18th century, Ludwigsburg became the primary residence. The Alte Schloss avoided demolition, serving various functions until its museal use in the late 19th century. Two fires in 1931 and 1944 led to significant damages, but subsequent reconstructions maintained the original outline. Today, it houses Baden-Württemberg's largest cultural history museum, showcasing art from the Stone Age to the present. The Württembergische Königsgruft beneath the Schlosskirche holds marble tombs of five royal family members. The Alte Schloss, once a symbol of power, now seamlessly blends historical architecture with a modern museum, preserving Württemberg's rich heritage.
