Description

Nidau Castle, nestled in the town of Nidau in the canton of Bern, Switzerland, carries a history that traces back to the 12th century. Initially established as a wooden fortress around 1140 by the Neuchâtel Counts, it evolved into a sturdy stone structure in the 13th century, featuring key elements like the keep, prison tower, and protective walls that still stand today.

Following the events of the Gugler War in 1375, the castle changed hands multiple times, coming under the authority of entities such as the Bishopric of Basel, the Neu-Kyburg Counts, and eventually falling into the ownership of Bern and Solothurn during the Sempach War in 1388.

For centuries, from 1388 to 1831, Nidau Castle served as the residence for 86 Bernese bailiffs and four district officials. The current building, predominantly dating back to 1627-1636, now houses offices of the cantonal administration. Among its occupants is the district governor's office for the Biel/Bienne administrative district. Additionally, the castle hosts a museum that delves into the region's history, notably showcasing the Juragewässerkorrektion, a significant water management project.
