Description

Habsburg Castle, founded in 1020 by Count Radbot and Bishop Werner of Strasbourg, stands proudly along the Aar River in the Duchy of Swabia, southwest of Klettgau. Its name's origin is a bit mysterious, possibly inspired by a hawk on its walls or the nearby ford (hab/hap in Middle High German) on the Aar River.

The official title "Habsburg" was adopted by Radbot's grandson, Otto II, marking the beginning of the esteemed House of Habsburg. As centuries passed, the castle's prominence diminished, particularly after Rudolph, a descendant, moved the family's seat of power to Austria in 1276.

Under the House of Habsburg until 1415, when Duke Frederick IV of Austria lost Aargau to the Swiss Confederacy, Habsburg Castle's legacy endured. The original red lion on a golden field coat of arms, once flown over the castle, became part of Austria's arms. Today, the modern arms of Habsburg, Switzerland, proudly feature the castle.

Surrounded by forests until 1500, the castle now comprises the preserved "large" and "small" towers, connected to a 13th-century residence. While parts lie in ruins, the eastern section's layout is visible through foundation walls. Discover its rich history while enjoying a meal in the castle's restaurant or exploring its small exhibition.
