Description
The Rheintorturm, also known as the Rhein Gate Tower, is a historic landmark in Konstanz, originally built around 1200. It served as both a protective tower and a gateway for traffic crossing the Rhine River. Positioned on the riverbanks, the tower played a key role in connecting northern regions to Switzerland during the late Middle Ages. It witnessed important events, including the successful defense of Konstanz by its citizens in 1548 against Spanish mercenaries. Despite facing proposals for demolition and repurposing, the Rheintorturm remains a resilient symbol of Konstanz's medieval history and its significance as a gateway for trade and travel.
