Description
The Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw, Poland, stands as a significant high-rise building with a height of 237 meters, making it the second tallest in the country. Built in 1955, it was once the eighth tallest globally and retained that position until 1961. Designed by Soviet-Russian architect Lev Rudnev, it reflects the "Seven Sisters" style and is informally known as the Eighth Sister. Originally dedicated to Joseph Stalin, it underwent destalinization, leading to the removal of Stalin's name. The Palace hosts various cultural institutions, including theaters, cinemas, and libraries. Sculptures around the building represent figures of culture and science. Despite controversy due to its Soviet origins, it remains a key landmark in Warsaw, serving as an exhibition center, office complex, and tourist attraction with a panoramic terrace. The building has undergone modernization, including LED lighting, and holds historical significance despite its divisive perception. To some extent the palace, even as a landmark of Poland, is not a significant gift from the Soviet Union for all poles, which creates polarization in the community.
