Description
The "Schlössli" was partially built on the walls of a medieval residential tower from the 13th or 14th century between 1680 and 1682. In 1730, Herkules Dietrich von Salis-Seewis arranged the Knights' Hall and the adjacent master's room on the upper floor instead of the corridor. The building was restored in 1959 and 1982-1983, during which the original facade design and the tower with a shingle roof were restored.
The four-story castle-like structure owes its appearance to the Baroque onion dome on the western flank, which was common in Graubünden in the 17th century. It served purely for representative purposes. The castle-like appearance is enhanced by the horizontal dividing lines between the floors and the gray-black plaster simulating corner blocks. The rooms on the 2nd floor were richly furnished around 1730 for Herkules Capol's son-in-law Herkules Dietrich von Salis-Seewis. The Baroque paneling, considered one of the most beautiful in Switzerland, and a stove from the workshop of Ludwig Pfau from the former grand room on the 1st floor were sold for 25,000 marks to Berlin in 1884 and from there to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 1906. In the south, there is a garden enclosed by a wall and two arches. The portal from 1682 displays the Capol-Schorsch alliance coat of arms.

If you’re in St. Gallen’s old town, it’s the only choice (and a good one at that) for fine castle dining. The service has been excellent during my visits and the food good. No overnighting here though, and they aren’t open Saturdays.
