Description
The area of Niedergösgen was inhabited early in history. Remains of a Roman estate, likely occupied until the late 4th century AD, have been discovered. The earlier name of the area was Bözach (first mentioned in 1294). In the early 14th century, the name of the Gösgen domain transferred to the village: Göskon inferior (1308), Gössikon (1347).
Around 1230, the castle of Gösgen was built slightly elevated on the edge of the Aare Valley near present-day Niedergösgen. It became the new seat of the Gösgen domain (previously located in Obergösgen). When the Lords of Gösgen died out, both the castle and the village of Niedergösgen came under the control of the Falkenstein family in 1383, who acquired the remaining parts of the domain in 1399. Niedergösgen suffered during the conflicts between the Swiss Confederacy and the Habsburgs, especially during the conquest of Aargau in 1415.
In 1444, during the Old Zürich War, Niedergösgen's castle was destroyed by forces from Solothurn and Bern due to the actions of Thomas von Falkenstein, the last Lord of Gösgen. Facing severe financial difficulties, he had to sell the entire domain to Solothurn in 1458. From then until the end of the Ancien Régime in 1798, Niedergösgen served as the seat of the local bailiff.
