Description
Coca Castle, located near the small town of Coca in the province of Segovia, central Spain, stands at the confluence of the Eresma and Voltoya rivers, approximately 60 kilometers west of Pedraza Castle.
Constructed in the 15th century by Bishop Alonso de Fonseca, the building of Coca Castle commenced in 1453 and was completed towards the end of the century. Encircled by a deep moat, it is considered a unique example of Spanish castles in the Mudejar style. Like other structures in this style, Coca Castle is predominantly made of brick. The influence of Arabic architecture is evident in decorative elements such as plasterwork and ornamentation on the walls of the keep, where an Arabic horseshoe arch inserted into a pointed arch is notable, as well as in the castle's gates.
Part of the property, owned by the Duke of Alba, was reconstructed by the Spanish government in the 1950s and now houses a forestry school with boarding facilities.
