Description
Set high on a rocky plateau in the Alpilles mountains, the Château des Baux-de-Provence is one of the most striking castle ruins in southern France. Though only fragments of the original structure remain, the site carries a powerful presence, with sweeping views over the olive groves and limestone hills of Provence.
The fortress dates back to the 10th century and was once a major stronghold in the region. In medieval times, it was home to powerful lords who controlled much of Provence. Its location made it a strategic defensive point, but it was eventually dismantled in the 1600s by order of Cardinal Richelieu.
Today, visitors can explore the remains of towers, a chapel, carved stairways, and medieval machines rebuilt for demonstrations. In summer, the site hosts open-air events and siege weapon shows that bring its history to life.
The Château des Baux-de-Provence is more than just stone walls. It's a place where nature and history meet, offering a peaceful but powerful reminder of the region’s medieval past.
