Description
This château is probably the most celebrated castle in continental Europe when one considers the number of visitors as well as the countless times this castle has been featured in art. It is also a castle of significant romantic history. If you are anywhere near it, you should take the time for a visit. Lord Byron immortalized this castle in his poetry in his Prisoner of Chillon, a poem about the historic experience of a reformer in the hands of the ruling nobility. His first work on this subject was the Sonnet on Chillon: SONNET ON CHILLON Eternal spirit of the chainless Mind! Brightest in dungeons, Liberty! thou art: For there thy habitation is the heart— The heart which love of thee alone can bind; And when thy sons to fetters are consigned— To fetters, and the damp vault's dayless gloom, Their country conquers with their martyrdom, And Freedom's fame finds wings on every wind. Chillon! thy prison is a holy place, And thy sad floor an altar—for 'twas trod, Until his very steps have left a trace Worn, as if thy cold pavement were a sod, By Bonnivard!—May none those marks efface! For they appeal from tyranny to God I've visited many times, and each time is another adventure. There are new exhibits and rooms not previously open that are open, which provide a reason for that further visit. Each time, another chapter unfolds. And if you plan a large event, even with hundreds of attendees, this castle can accommodate. Catoring and help in organizing the logistics of an event are no problem at all. Just contact information for more details.
