Description

Ruine Königstein Castle, likely from the 12th century, includes the oldest structure, the castle chapel. Duke Georg expanded it in 1500, and in 1563–1569, Conrad König dug a 152.5-meter well. In the late 16th century, under Elector Christian I of Saxony, it transformed into a robust fortress, designed by Paul Buchner. New structures included the gatehouse, defense rampart, and two pleasure houses. Post the Thirty Years' War, adaptations continued, like the Johann-Georgen Bastion and St. George's Chapel. In the 19th century, after ceasing courtly use, it underwent further adjustments. The fortress became part of the German Empire's fortification system in 1871, with additional batteries constructed between 1870 and 1895, marking the final significant alterations.
