Description
Appenzell Castle, known as Schloss Appenzell in German, stands proudly in the Appenzell District of the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden, Switzerland. Erected in 1563 by the physician Antoni Löw, it is a rare 16th-century stone structure in Appenzell and holds significance as part of Switzerland's national heritage. Dr. Löw, a staunch advocate of the Protestant Reformation in Appenzell, faced adversity and eventual execution by local Catholics in 1584. Subsequently, the castle was seized by the city and bestowed upon the Franciscans, who occupied it for nearly a century until 1682. After their departure, the castle changed hands, eventually becoming the property of the Sutter family in 1875 when Dr. Anton Alfred Sutter assumed sole ownership. The castle, often referred to as the "Doctor's House," continues to be owned by the Sutter family today.
