Description

Alcázar of Segovia, A Fairytale Fortress on the Cliff

The Alcázar of Segovia is one of Spain’s most iconic castles and it’s easy to see why. Perched dramatically on a rocky hill where the Eresma and Clamores rivers meet, its towers, slate roofs, and turreted silhouette look like something straight out of a storybook. In fact, it’s often said to have inspired Walt Disney’s castle for Snow White.

The fortress dates back to at least the 12th century, though its structure has been expanded and reshaped over time by various monarchs. Over the centuries, it has served many purposes: royal residence, military academy, and even a state prison. Today, it stands as a museum and one of the most visited landmarks in Castile and León.

What makes the Alcázar especially striking is its shape the layout resembles the bow of a ship. Inside, the grandeur continues: highlights include the Throne Room, the Armory, and the Hall of Kings, which features a striking line-up of statues representing Castilian royalty.

The Alcázar of Segovia is more than just a beautiful building it’s a place rich with history, royal intrigue, and stunning views over the old town and surrounding countryside. A visit here feels like stepping back in time.
