The castle site south of Steinach, initially built by the Lords of Steinach around 1200, features a two-story tower likely constructed around 1230. Acquired by Ludwig Vogelweider in 1481, it later passed to St. Gallen Abbey in 1577. After the abbey's dissolution in 1805, the castle was auctioned, and its upper floor was dismantled in 1833. Under heritage protection in 1975, it underwent restoration. The Steinerburg belonged to the Pfauenmoos Family Foundation of the Freiherren von Heyl zu Herrnsheim. Acquired by the municipality of Steinach in 2016 for a symbolic one-franc price, it carries the obligation of maintenance according to cantonal heritage regulations.
