Description
Malbork Castle, situated in Malbork, Poland, is a 13th-century Teutonic castle and the world's largest brick fortress, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Initially built by the Teutonic Knights in the form of an Ordensburg fortress, it served various purposes, including as a Polish royal residence. Construction spanned approximately 132 years, from 1274 to 1406, making it a classic medieval fortress and the largest brick castle upon completion. Notably, the castle played a role in the Thirteen Years' War, witnessing the entry of King Casimir IV Jagiellon in 1457. After the Partitions of Poland in 1772, it underwent varied uses, including as a poorhouse and barracks. In the early 19th century, renewed interest led to restoration efforts. Damaged during World War II, ongoing reconstruction aims to preserve its historical and architectural significance. Today, Malbork Castle stands as a symbol of Prussian history and national consciousness, hosting the Castle Museum since 1961, with ongoing restoration and an amber exhibition.
