Description
Schloss Montfort, originally "Veste Burg Argen," stands on a nearly square rock island in Lake Constance, with roots tracing back to the 14th century. Transformed from a fortress to a palace, it later served as a prison. Acquired by Wilhelm I. of Württemberg in 1858, the ruins gave way to a Moorish-style villa, now named Schloss Montfort. Passing through various owners, including Princess Luise of Prussia, it became a private estate, a proposed railway retreat, and finally a community-owned property in Langenargen since 1961. Today, the castle hosts a collection of 16th to 18th-century paintings and features a discotheque, restaurant, and concert hall. The garden includes a concert shell for summer performances, complemented by the nearby Baroque church of St. Martin and the lakeside promenade.
