Description

Founded under Abbot Pirmin around 724, the Reichenau Abbey initially had a wooden church. Abbot Haito later constructed a Carolingian basilica, parts of which remain in the transept and east transept. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary on August 16, 816, the abbey expanded under Abbot Erlebald, including a westwork with twin towers. The worship of St. Mark's relics gained prominence, leading to renovations by Abbot Berno around 1000. Emperor Henry III witnessed the dedication on April 24, 1048. Noteworthy features include a Norman-style timber roof from 1236/37 and a Gothic choir. The church houses the tomb of Emperor Karl III and notable abbots, while its treasury holds relics, including the Holy Blood Relic.
