Allerheiligen Monastery – A Timeless Landmark in Schaffhausen
Tucked away in the heart of Schaffhausen, the Allerheiligen Monastery is one of Switzerland’s best-preserved monastic complexes. Founded around the year 1049, it was once a powerful Benedictine abbey and a major cultural and religious center in the region.
The complex includes a Romanesque cathedral, peaceful cloisters, and a historic herb garden. Walking through the quiet arcades and stone halls, you get a real sense of the centuries that have passed. The impressive church tower, still standing tall, offers a panoramic view over the old town for those willing to climb the steps.
Although the monastery was dissolved during the Reformation, much of the original architecture survived. Today, the site is home to the Museum zu Allerheiligen, which explores local history, archaeology, and art.
Whether you're drawn to medieval architecture, curious about monastic life, or just looking for a peaceful place to wander, Allerheiligen is a highlight in Schaffhausen’s old town that deserves a visit.
