Avenches Castle

The castle on Avenches hill has a history dating back to 607. The current medieval castle, owned by Bishop Bourcard of Oltingen in 1363, underwent renovations after the Bernese conquest in 1536. Avenches municipality bought it in 1804. Over the years, it served various purposes, including a school from 1838. Today, it houses a local music society and an art gallery on the former prison floors.
