Description

The castle, believed to be built in the 13th century by Staufen ministerial Wilhelm von Wimpfen, was first mentioned in 1326. Later, in 1363, the Zwingenberg family, considered robbers, was expelled by Count Palatine Ruprecht I and the castle was demolished. It was rebuilt in 1403 by the lords of Hirschhorn, who were granted ownership. After their extinction in 1632, the castle became subject to legal disputes and changed hands between Kurmainz, Kurpfalz, and the Grand Duchy of Baden.

During the November Revolution in 1918, Friedrich II, the last Grand Duke of Baden, sought refuge in Schloss Zwingenberg when armed men entered his palace in Karlsruhe. The castle owner today is Ludwig Prinz von Baden (* 1937), a descendant of Grand Duke Karl Friedrich of Baden. Above Zwingenberg Castle, remnants of Fürstenstein Castle can still be found.
