Description
Schwetzingen Palace is most notable for its gorgeous gardens which can still be enjoyed in their original form. With its rich history from the castle’s origins in the mid-14th century, the palace was extended with two new wings built from 1697 and reached its heyday under Prince Elector Carl Theodor during the 18th century.
During an extensive restoration effort spanning from 1975 to 1991, the interiors of the castle were meticulously restored and furnished with authentic 18th-century furniture. On the main floor, within the framework of a castle museum, the state rooms, the residence of the Elector, and the residence of the Electress vividly illustrate the functional profile of the castle during the Karl-Theodor era.
Of particular art historical significance are the rooms located on the second floor, part of the residence of Countess Luise Karoline von Hochberg, which was redesigned during the Baden era from 1803 onward. These rooms stand out due to the exceptionally well-preserved hand-printed wallpapers (1804) from the Zuber et Cie company in Rixheim. Notably, these wallpapers adorn the Compagniezimmer with an Alpine panorama titled "Vues de Suisse," the bedroom, and the Grand Cabinet, adding to the castle's historical and artistic allure.
