Description
Schloss Oberberg is beautifully situated in Gossau, near St. Gallen.
The builders of the castle cannot be definitively determined, dating back to the early days of the St. Gallen Abbey. The administration of their rights was entrusted to the lords of Andwil. It is believed that they likely constructed the tower that is still visible today around the mid-13th century. Given that the lineage of the family can be traced back to the 12th century, it is suspected that the current castle stands on the site of a previous structure. The branch of the family residing at Oberberg named themselves after the castle since the 13th century (first mentioned in 1262 as "Chunrad de Obernberge").
In 1380, Abbot Kuno von Stoffel granted the castle and the Oberberg bailiwick to Knight Albrecht von Andwil in exchange for 80 marks of silver. During the Appenzell Wars in 1403, the Appenzellers were unable to capture the castle. In 1452, Hans the Younger of Andwil sold the fortress to the Holy Spirit Hospital in St. Gallen for 4000 Rhine guilders. Briefly in 1489, the castle came under the control of the Swiss Confederates and later returned to the monastery, remaining in their possession until 1805. Since 1924, Oberberg has been owned by the "Genossenschaft Oberberg" (Oberberg Cooperative).
In 1955, a fire severely damaged the castle. After reconstruction and restoration, a restaurant and a local museum were established. The tower dates back to the 13th century, and there is an annex with a hipped roof constructed in 1545. Only minimal remnants of the castle's outer wall remain today.
