Description
The Castle of Morat, or Murten in German, was built at the behest of Count Peter II of Savoy, in 1255. After the Savoy domination, the Castle became the administrative seat of the Bernese and Fribourgese bailiffs. After that, it alternately served as a hospital, as a barrack building or as a prison. Today, the castle serves as the seat of the prefecture and houses various offices, including the District Office of the Lake District and the Civil Registry Office of See.
Since the late 1980s, the castle courtyard has been the focal point for the concert series "Morat classics." The Swiss Inventory of Cultural Property of national and regional significance lists the castle as a Category B object with the number 2259.
Of particular note is the Donjon, also known as "Luegisland," which was made accessible to the public in 2018. In its attic, there have been nesting boxes for the peregrine falcons listed on the Red List since 1985.
