Description

During the Bernese invasion, both Le Rosey Castle and Rolle Castle were attacked and burned. Rolle became part of the bailiwick of Morges under Bernese rule (1536-1798). In 1558, the Bernese merchant Hans Steiger acquired Rolle's barony, holding it until the French Revolution. The town successfully bought itself out from certain taxes in 1740. After the French invasion in 1798, Rolle became the seat of a district. The Helvetic Republic acquired the castle in 1799, using it as the seat of government until 1974. In 1802, during the Bourla-papey uprising, important documents were burned in the castle's archives.
