Description
The area's history dates back to Ibero-Roman times, with early evidence found in Peniscola's port from the 1st-2nd centuries BC. In the 11th century AD, Arab writer Al-Idrisi mentioned Baniskula, describing a Moorish castle overlooking the sea. In the 13th century, James I of Aragon gained control of the castle after an accord with the last Almohad governor. The Knights Templar, under James II of Aragon, rebuilt the castle in 1294, completing it in 1307. Over the centuries, it underwent modifications and upgrades, serving military purposes in various conflicts. Antipope Benedict XIII resided there in the early 15th century. The castle appeared in the film "El Cid" and was restored in 1960. Today, it's a popular tourist site, along with the nearby beaches, making Peniscola a favored family holiday destination.
