Peñafiel Castle

The Peñafiel Castle is situated on a long but narrow ridge, making it only 23 meters wide at its broadest point but stretching 210 meters in length. The walls, equipped with battlements, converge sharply at two points, each featuring a massive round tower. There are twelve battlemented towers with arrow slits on each side of the castle, and solid battlements line the walls. Two additional towers guard the main gate. The castle is divided into eastern and western sections by a wall, creating a bailey. Enemies entering through the gate could be attacked from all sides with arrows or other projectiles.

At the broadest part, the 34-meter-high keep (torre de homenaje) rises like a ship's bridge. It is further secured by eight small turrets with battlements and arrow slits. The castle is surrounded by a dry moat, accessible only by a well-defended bridge, providing an additional layer of defense.
