Description
The Mannheim Palace, built in the Baroque style, consists of several wings: the East Wing, the Honor Court East, the Central Building, the Honor Court West, the South Wing, and the West Wing. The building also incorporates a palace church and the palace library. The long facades typically have three stories, with four-story pavilions inserted into the structure, adding variety to the rectangular architecture. The main building and the central pavilion each have an additional floor. The historical interior, especially the main floor, was a masterpiece of European significance.
Spanning almost 450 meters in length and covering an area of six hectares, the extensive complex is one of the largest palaces in Europe. Mannheim Palace is the second-largest Baroque palace complex in Europe after Versailles. During construction, it was ensured that the palace had exactly one more window than Versailles, symbolizing the significant status of the Electors of the Palatinate within the Holy Roman Empire.
Radiating from the palace and aligned with it are the so-called Mannheim Squares, the division of the city into blocks rather than streets. The entire palace incorporates the right-angled, uniform architectural principle of the Mannheim grid city. Long wings are added at right angles to the central building, with their main fronts parallel to the opposite city squares.
