Description

Over the centuries, Kirchheim Palace transitioned from a military stronghold to a residence for the Dukes of Württemberg, serving as a hunting lodge and dower house. In the 18th century, Duke Charles Eugene made significant use of the palace for his hunting trips, even transforming its plant nursery into an opera house. His relationship with Franziska von Hohenheim led to her exile at Kirchheim Palace after Charles Eugene's death. Later, in 1811, King Frederick I exiled his brother Louis and his family to the palace due to financial issues.

Henriette von Nassau-Weilburg, Louis's wife, played a significant role in the community, establishing schools, orphanages, and outreach programs. After her death in 1857, the palace fell into disuse. In the 20th century, it housed various institutions, including a teacher's college and a museum.

Today, Kirchheim Castle is a heritage site managed by Staatliche Schlösser und Gärten Baden-Württemberg. The palace's south-facing living spaces on the second floor have been transformed into a museum open to the public. The museum showcases the lives of the last two residents, Franziska and Henriette, with a focus on Franziska's preserved furniture, providing a glimpse into the palace's history during her time. The restoration efforts in 1985 and 1997 recreated the ambiance of Franziska's era within the castle walls.
